The Secret History

Richard Papen arrives at Hampden College eager to escape his ordinary past and is drawn toward a small, self-contained group of students devoted to ancient Greek. Their confidence, privilege and intense loyalty make the circle seem like a world apart from the rest of the college. Donna Tartt's The Secret History follows Richard as he gains their trust and discovers that the group's cultivated manners conceal a violent secret. Knowledge brings acceptance, but it also binds him to people whose private rules have begun to replace ordinary moral limits.

The novel reveals a death early, shifting the suspense from what happened to how arrogance, beauty and intellectual obsession made it possible.
