Donna Tartt

Donna Tartt is an American novelist known for intricately plotted books about secrecy, beauty, guilt, and outsiders entering closed social worlds. Born in Mississippi in 1963, she studied at Bennington College and published The Secret History in 1992. That novel is narrated by Richard Papen, a transfer student drawn into an elite Greek class whose cultivated ideal of beauty helps conceal a murder. By revealing the crime early, Tartt shifts suspense from who did it to how intellectual glamour, class desire, and group loyalty deform judgment. The Little Friend moves to a Southern family haunted by an unsolved death, while The Goldfinch follows Theo Decker after a museum bombing binds grief, art, theft, and survival; it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Tartt's long novels combine crime structures with literary and art-historical allusion, but their narrators are not neutral guides.
