Overview

Excerpt from Sesenheim, From Goethe's "Dichtung Und Wahrheit" Edited, With an Introduction and Notes IT was on the second day of April, 1770, that Goethe, a youth of twenty-one years, arrived at Strasburg in order to complete his course in law in that university. Six months later, in the second week of October, he was introduced by a fellow-student to the family of pastor Brion of Sesenheim, a village situated at a distance of thirty-three and one-half kilometers from Strasburg, and his acquaintance with F rederika, the parson's daughter, led to the romance told by himself in the following pages. That first visit was followed by another in the winter term, and by at least two more in the coming spring, the first extending over almost the entire month of April and the first days of May; the second, over the second half of May and the first days of June. He left Strasburg in August, 177r, and did not see Frederika again until the asth of September, 1779, on a flying visit in connection with his journey to Switzerland.
