I used to imagine adventures for myself, I invented a life, so that I could at least exist somehow. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from Underground

Notes from Underground is a short novel written in 1864. The first part of the story is told in monologue by an unnamed narrator, the Underground Man, who attacks the optimistic ideals of positivism. In the second part of the book he confesses some sordid deeds he has done in his life, demonstrating how even an "educated" person like him can actually be profoundly abject.
