This might not only be the best book I’ve read this year but possibly my favorite book of all time. (with both sequels in the trilogy following close behind.) This book is a perfect combination of noir/police procedural mixed with themes of existentialism. This book follows a young detective, Hank Palace, tasked with solving a suspicious murder of an insurance man. However there is a twist, there is a massive asteroid on a collision course with the earth destined to cause a massive extinction level event. So while society slowly crumbled around him while the world anticipates their collective demise, Palace races against the clock to solve this murder with the limited resources he’s given. What does it truly mean to strive for justice in a world destined to die?
