When a young boy has to stay out of school while an infected foot heals, he is sent to stay with his great-grandparents. Great-grandfather had been a sailor and a fisherman, but after a stroke at 89 years, he must use a wheelchair for at least two months to regain strength. The Old Boy and the Young Boy decide to make up stories and rhymes about heroes, real an imaginary, true and false. They look at Hercules, Siegfried, and men with daring-do, what a hero is and what he is not. Other members of the family become involved and add their stories, and the Young Boy writes it all down on a roll of wallpaper. At the end of the week, Great-grandfather has two surprises for the Young Boy, one which will stay with the Young Boy forever.
