The most profoundly moving literary achievements of Thomas More belong to a group of his writings called the Tower works, which include the Dialogue of Camfort, the letters written from the Tower, and the works in the present volume. Part of the appeal of the Tower works lies in the fact that they were written during a period of More's life that was characterized by unusual religious dedication and human courage. This is the period when he was incarcerated in the Tower of London and finally executed, or martyred, because he would not grant Henry VIII's supremacy over the English church (April 17, 1534-July 6, 1535).<br/>The present volume is the fifth to appear in the modernized series of selected works of St. Thomas More, a series designed to make available to the general reader works which have already appeared or are about to appear in The Yale Edition of the Complete Works.
