Overview

The fate of two twelve-year-old boys and their widowed mothers in the post-war period. The two twelve-year-old school friends Heinrich and Martin never knew their fathers, who died in the war. Heinrich grew up in oppressively poor conditions. Far too early, he is placed in the world of adults and has to take responsibility. His friend Martin knows no financial hardship, but suspects that his mother is missing something despite all the prosperity. Heinrich B̲ll describes very sensitively the problems and hardships of these two boys, who also have to cope with the difficulties of the beginning of puberty. Their and their mothers' fates are representative of the war-torn generation.
