Overview

Object features many previously unpublished works by Mapplethorpe from his early career from 1969 to 1973. Primarily using appropriated imagery from magazines in mixed-media collage and assemblage pieces made up of spray paint, fabrics and found objects like potato bags, beer cans and cookie bags along with a few examples of his own first forays into photography using his newly acquired Polaroid camera in 1970. Beautifully designed by Dimitri Levas with an original text Robert’s Hands by Patti Smith. "He had the hands of an artist. Prominent veins, adroit, with a slight tremble. Not the tremble of impairment, but of anticipation. One could feel his heart beating within those hands, pumping excitedly as he circled his work, the true objects of his desire." Patti Smith
