Emily Lawrence, growing up in neglected fashion in a seedy boarding house, befriends Max, a middle-aged scientist who encourages her to seek her goals in intellectual pursuits. Emily has to deal with scandal, suburban snobbery and the emotions thus aroused. The author has written three other novels including 'The Watch Tower'.
