The Studio of Giacometti

Jean Genet and Alberto Giacometti became friends in the 1950's. Genet posed for 3 paintings and 4 drawings by Giacometti and, whilst in the studio, had leisure to observe the artist at work. This resulting essay is a rare opportunity to observe two of the great creative minds of the last century. In this new English translation, translator Phil King (b. 1967) brings his exhaustive knowledge of the French literary/intellectual tradition, and his precise nose for nuance, to Genet's text. He has a Fine Art MA from Goldsmiths' College, and has written on art and French literature and thought, with a focus on "desire". He is just finishing a translation of André Gide's Le Traité du Narcisse for his own amusement. Directeur Artistique, Marc Camille Chaimowicz (born Post-war Paris), brings a perfectly-pitched sense for where meanings derived from text and image may work into tertiary areas of finesse and appreciation. He is a renowned multi-disciplinary artist represented by Cabinet in London, MD 72 in Berlin and Andrew Kreps in New York. He is a reader at Reading University and a consultant at l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Dijon. Recent exhibitions have "romanticised aspects of Genet's early life within a series of fictional spaces to create a loose portrait"."
