Biography Rudolf Ditzen, pseudonym Hans Fallada, was born in Greifswald in 1893, the son of a high-ranking judicial officer. He attended a humanistic grammar school but did not complete his education and worked as an agricultural apprentice. He worked as a field laborer, court inspector, and accountant from 1915 to 1925, and as an address clerk, advertisement collector, and publishing house employee from 1928 to 31. 'The Young Goedeschal' was his debut novel in 1920, and he has been a freelance writer since 1931. Fallada became recognized across the world with his extensively translated story 'Little Man - What now? (1932). During the Nazi period, he lived in solitude on his six-acre farm in Mecklenburg as a "undesirable author." He relocated to Berlin in 1945 and died there in 1947.
