Ölü mücevheri ne yapacakmış ? - Öteki dünyada düğün mü varmış neymiş ! Besbelli takınacakmış

Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar’s Kuyruklu Yıldız Altında Bir İzdivaç turns the public anxiety surrounding Halley’s Comet in 1910 Istanbul into a comedy of misinformation, gender conflict, and courtship. İrfan Galip, an educated bachelor who lectures neighborhood women about science as scorning their supposed ignorance, becomes intrigued by anonymous letters that challenge both his claims and his view of women.
The correspondence leads to Feriha Davut, whose intelligence unsettles İrfan’s confidence and shifts the novel from a social panorama toward an unusual romance. Around them, rumors of collision and apocalypse spread through streets and homes, exposing how quickly hearsay can acquire the authority of fact. Gürpınar gives these fears energy through lively dialogue, domestic detail, and competing voices instead of treating the neighborhood merely as a backdrop.
The comet therefore serves two purposes: it tests the boundary between scientific explanation and superstition, and it creates a temporary space in which Feriha can contest male assumptions about education and marriage. The novel’s enduring force comes from the way its comic intrigue joins a precise portrait of late Ottoman urban life to a sharper argument about who is permitted to speak with knowledge.
