How can one gain an overview of Marx's work? Das Kapital, which remains a fragment, is a landmark in economics, but its breadth is so vast that it's not a good first read. The text of a June 1865 lecture in which Marx develops the idea of surplus value in front of an audience has been preserved. This lecture is basic, concise, well stated, and funny. It introduces Marx's critique of capitalist society.
