A sheltered upbringing ends abruptly for twenty-year-old Alleyne in Arthur Conan Doyle's The White Company Illustrated. The terms of his father's will require him to leave the abbey and see the world. On the same day, worldly John of Hordle is expelled, and their paths meet veteran archer Sam Aylward at the Pied Merlin inn.
Aylward has returned from France to recruit for the White Company and to ask Sir Nigel Loring to command it. Alleyne's route to Sir Nigel also brings him into conflict with his own brother and into the company of Maude, a young woman he helps escape. Service as Sir Nigel's squire then connects personal loyalty to the wider campaign.
Set in 1366 and 1367 across England, France, and Spain, the adventure moves toward Edward the Black Prince's effort to restore Peter of Castile. Doyle uses the Hundred Years' War as a lived environment of inns, abbeys, archers, ships, and competing codes of honor. Alleyne must acquire judgment outside monastic rules, learning what courage means among professional fighters whose humor and fellowship coexist with mercenary violence. The historical scale expands, but the story remains grounded in a young man's first choices about allegiance.
