Ten days away from a Putney drapery counter feel like liberation to Mr. Hoopdriver in H. G. Wells's The Wheels of Chance Illustrated. Poorly paid and frustrated, he owns a heavy bicycle and begins a tour of England's southern coast with more imagination than riding skill.
His route repeatedly crosses that of Jessie Milton, a seventeen-year-old cycling alone in rational dress. Jessie has fled her stepmother's home, hoping to create an independent life, but she travels with Bechamel, an older man whose promises conceal predatory intentions. Hoopdriver's awkward intervention becomes a genuine rescue, and the two continue across the countryside together.
Class embarrassment follows him as closely as the bicycle. Ashamed of being a shop assistant, Hoopdriver invents stories of wealth and South African experience until honesty becomes unavoidable. Wells uses punctures, roads, holiday exhilaration, and improvised identities to connect the bicycle craze with changing ideas about mobility and freedom. Jessie discovers that bookish rebellion has not prepared her for every danger; Hoopdriver discovers that courage can exceed the social role assigned to him. Their journey is comic, but its hopes are shaped by work, gender, and the narrow choices available at home.
