The Oud Player [Udi]

This is a translation into English of Fatma Aliye's novel, Udi. It is one of the first books written by a woman that was published in the Islamic world, but it also has an interesting portrait not only of musical culture in 19th century Damascus, Cairo, and Istanbul, but also the large Jewish presence in Damascus.
