Cloomber Hall has stood empty near Branksome until General Heatherstone, formerly of the Indian Army, settles there with his family. His behavior soon makes the house feel occupied by more than its new residents. He hears a bell no one can explain, fears enemies connected to India, and grows increasingly distressed as the fifth of October approaches each year.
John Fothergill West is drawn into the mystery through his engagement to Heatherstone's daughter. A shipwreck then brings three Buddhist priests from Kurrachee to the bay, and the general reacts as if a long-delayed sentence has finally arrived. Colonel Rufus Smith shares part of the same past, linking the dread at Cloomber Hall to military actions neither man wishes to discuss.
Arthur Conan Doyle's The Mystery of Cloomber Illustrated combines a country-house enigma with supernatural menace and the return of colonial violence. Marshes, a bottomless pit called the Hole of Cree, private papers, and the recurring bell give the investigation its Gothic machinery. The suspense depends on a guilty history pressing into the present, not on an arbitrary haunting. Its treatment of Buddhist figures reflects the exoticizing assumptions of nineteenth-century British fiction, a limitation that sits beside the novel's sharper idea: power exercised far from home may produce consequences that distance cannot contain.
