Raised as an Anglican, he converted to Catholicism in 1922. Characterized by George Bernard Shaw as “a man of colossal genius,” Chesterton considered himself primarily a journalist. Though he authored thousands of essays, his vast body of work encompassed poetry, philosophy, theology, drama, biography, literary and social criticism, and fiction. He is also the creator of the mystery stories featuring the priest-detective Father Brown. On the topic of Christianity, Chesterton publicly debated his many detractors, while his writing influenced famous converts, including C. S. Lewis. Today, there are dozens of societies and initiatives worldwide honoring Chesterton’s life and work.
