The Arrest of Arsène Lupin opens the sequence. Imprisonment and escape then receive separate cases, with The Mysterious Traveller shifting the field again. The Queen's Necklace appears before The Seven of Hearts. Later entries are titled Madame Imbert's Safe and The Black Pearl, moving between public spectacle and private valuables. They create repeated opportunities for Lupin to manipulate what witnesses and authorities believe they see. A concluding encounter originally named Sherlock Holmes; later publications changed the detective to Herlock Sholmes.
As the first collection centered on Lupin, the volume establishes the pleasures that define the gentleman-burglar series. Crime becomes a contest of performance and intelligence, and the apparent limits imposed by a cell or an accusation can form part of a larger plan. The stories remain separate cases, yet Lupin's adaptability gives them a common rhythm. Each new setting invites the question of whether he is absent, disguised, already in control, or all three at once.
