The Diamond As Big As the Ritz Illustrated

Percy Washington's invitation takes John T. Unger far beyond the ordinary wealth of his boarding-school classmates in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Diamond as Big as the Ritz. John comes from Hades, a Mississippi River town; Percy claims that his father owns a diamond larger than the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

The boast proves literal. In an unsurveyed pocket of Montana, the Washington family controls a mountain made of diamond. Its abundance creates a paradox: releasing too many stones would destroy their market value. The family's fortune therefore depends on secrecy, limited sales, and absolute control over everyone who enters the estate. The estate's splendor therefore works as camouflage: every garden, palace, and display of abundance is financed by fear of an outsider's knowledge and sustained violence. That isolation also turns hospitality into a trap for every invited outsider.

That control has produced a hidden regime of enslavement, imprisonment, and murder. John initially experiences luxury as enchantment and falls in love with Percy's sister Kismine, but she reveals that guests cannot be allowed to leave alive. Fitzgerald pushes wealth past extravagance into isolation and terror. The fantasy asks what ownership becomes when preserving value requires removing law, history, and other human beings from view. John must decide how to escape a paradise built to make witnesses disappear.
