The Crucible by Arthur Miller takes place during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and explores the dangers of mass insanity. When a group of Salem girls are caught dancing, they start accusing others to avoid punishment. Causing panic in the community, local farmer John Proctor tries to expose the lies behind the accusations, but his wife Elizabeth is accused by his ex-lover Abigail William. In the end, Proctor is sentenced to death, but chooses to die with honesty rather than accepting a lie. The play criticizes the destructive power of fear and groupthink. -- Back cover
