Overview

Book Description: There are dreadful — possibly vituperative — rumors about the Borgias of Renaissance Italy, and presently Dumas, author of resemblant classics as THE THREE Intimates, in his Celebrated Crimes series, dishes up the dirt in all its unpretty glory. I didn't write this book for children. Dumas has hashed no words in describing the violent scenes of a violent time. Sometimes information appears distorted out of their true perspective, and in others, the author makes unwarranted charges. The careful, mature florilegium — for whom the books are intended — will honor and allow for this. From 1839 to 1841, Dumas, with the help of several familiars, collected Celebrated Crimes, an eight-volume collection of essays on renowned malefactors and crimes from European history. He featured Beatrice Cenci, Martin Guerre, Cesare, and Lucrezia Borgia, as well as more recent events and malefactors, including the cases of the maintained killers Karl Ludwig Sand and Antoine Francois Desrues, who were executed.
