Overview

The Art of War was written between 1519 and 1520, and it is a treatise with the format of Socratic dialogues, which take place in the Orti Oricellari, the famous Florentine Renaissance gardens. It is considered one of the most important work of Machiavelli. The Art of War is divided into a preface and seven books. The theories exposed are based on Machiavelli’s direct experience. He served for fourteen years as secretary to the Chancery of Florence. The work has had a lot of influence on military theory, and Jefferson had Machiavelli's Art of War in his library.
