There was soon a profound silence in the house, the closing of doors and the sound of footsteps having ceased, and I went to a window, to gaze on the scene with out. There was a three-quarters' moon, which gave light enough to render all the nearer objects of the landscape distinctly visible. The view had nothing remarkable in it, but it was always rural and pretty. The little river, and the broad meadows, were not to be seen from my side of the house, which commanded the carriage road that wound through the lawn - the farm-house - the distant church - the neat and pretty rectory - the dwelling of Mary, and a long reach of farms, that lay along the valley, and on.the broad breast of the rising ground to the westward.
