Inspired by the nature essays of Fabre, Maeterlinck began a period of amateur observation and experiment with his apiary, eventually publishing The Life of the Bee and The Life of the Fly, as well as the essays on life and flowers collected here.Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) was a Belgian writer of poetry, a wide variety of essays, and symbolic dramas, including Pelleeas et Meelisande (1892). In 1911 he won the Nobel Prize for literature.
