Overview

English-German bilingual edition of Hegel’s Lectures on World-History, presented first in English, and then in German, with an introduction to the text. This is the first and only biligual printing of Hegel's works.

Hegel's Philosophie der Weltgeschichte, presented in several versions between 1770-1831, is his most extensive argument for viewing history as a united, mythologized, rational, and meaningful story. He explicitly lays out his presumptions and biases underpinning his historical analysis, directing his readers to his other works for proof of his a priori assumptions. His philosophic premise that history is the manifestation of Reason is “proved in philosophy and is here regarded as demonstrated”. Here we have his arguments about the nation-state’s spiritual Apotheosis- almost deification- which is instrumental to the “particularization of the absolute, universal being, [which is] the profound task of Metaphysics.” Great civilizations and cultures are the manifestations of ‘die Idee an und für sich’ as they vacillate in their struggle to bring absolute freedom to the individual, paradoxically, through absolute allegiance to the State; “The History of the world is none other than the progress of the consciousness of Freedom; a progress whose development according to the necessity of its nature…itself is its own object of attainment, and the sole aim of Spirit.”

This series is the first English-Language “Hauptwerke”, or complete systematic major works, of Hegel. The American English translation is followed by the original German (translated from the old Frankur script into the modern German text) for easy reference and studying. The original paragraph markings of the text make it easy to flip back to the original German to understand the original text better.

This is the 6th of 11 publications from Newcomb Livraria Press covering all of Hegel’s major works chronologically in English and German:

1.
