One of the best poems by Federico García Lorca The best Bullfighting poem ever written Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías was published in 1935 by the editorial Cruz y Raya (Madrid), with illustrations by José Caballero. It consists of a set of four elegies with a bullfighting theme dedicated to the death of the bullfighter Ignacio Sánchez Mejías. Lorca composed it for his friend, the bullfighter Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, who died of gangrene in August 1934 due to a goring at the Manzanares bullring by the bull Granadino. Lorca first read it in November 1934. Despite Lorca not being a great bullfighting enthusiast, unlike Gerardo Diego, this elegy is considered one of the greatest examples of bullfighting poetry.
