
Insectivorous Plants follows Charles Darwin into a botanical problem that seems almost animal in character: how do plants capture, recognize, and digest prey. First published in 1875, the study belongs to his broader work on natural selection, but its argument proceeds through close observation and repeated experiment instead of a general survey of evolutionary theory.
Darwin tests carnivorous plants with markedly different stimuli. He offers meat and glass, blows on sensitive structures, and touches them with hair to discover what activates a response. Movement associated with an animal proves significant. Nutritionally useless disturbance can be ignored. That selectivity suggests an economy of energy: a trap should close when the probable reward justifies the cost.
The book also compares forms of capture. Some plants possess distinct trap-like structures; others produce sticky fluids that hold prey. Darwin reads this variety as evidence that natural selection can produce multiple solutions to the same environmental difficulty, especially where ordinary soil offers limited resources.
Illustrations by Darwin, together with drawings by his sons George and Francis, support the experimental record. A second English edition, edited after his death by Francis Darwin, added notes and material in 1889. Its enduring value in botany and scientific method lies in the movement from small physical reactions to carefully bounded evolutionary explanation.
