During Harry's third year at Hogwarts, J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban turns an escaped prisoner's shadow into a threat that follows him from the wizarding streets to the school grounds. Sirius Black has broken out of Azkaban, and the authorities believe Harry is his target. Dementors are stationed around Hogwarts, bringing a cold that forces Harry to confront some of his most painful memories. Classes, Quidditch, and friendship continue, yet every familiar routine now carries the pressure of a danger whose history Harry does not fully understand.
Rowling builds the novel around incomplete accounts of the past. New lessons and encounters widen Harry's magical abilities, but the larger change lies in how he learns to question the story he has inherited about his parents and Sirius. Ron and Hermione remain central to that search, giving the mystery emotional weight beyond its pursuit scenes. The book keeps its later reversals concealed, tracing instead how fear can harden into certainty when institutions repeat an untested version of events. Its blend of school adventure, suspense, and memory makes the third installment a turning point in the series' treatment of loyalty, judgment, and personal history.
