Overview

Monsignor John Blackwood "Blackie" Ryan is the rector of Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral and the Archbishop's right-hand snoop. The family and friends of the recently deceased Wolfe Tone Quinlan come to him with an odd request: they claim that poltergeist phenomena are afflicting the family home, clearly indicating that the dead man's soul is asking for an exorcism and Christian burial. Since, however, Mr. Quinlan's last religious affiliation was with a Devil-worshipping cult -- to which he willed his very considerable estate -- permission will not be given without further investigation. Needless to say, Blackie is intrigued; he slowly begins a process of discovery about the extremely dysfunctional Quinlan family and social circle.
