by Annie Besant
This Theosophical work- one of a large number penned by Annie Besant over the course of several decades- is firstly an oratory on the basic premise of Dharma, why it exists, and its spiritual role. It speaks of Ishvara and the concept of spiritual ascendance according to whether an individual has or has not fulfilled their specific Dharma. The work subjugates- at least in part- the concept to the Hindu caste system, since it was delivered to an audience in India. Thus, with each successive group, a different kind of lifestyle is proposed as fulfilling ones' Dharma, deviation from which can cause negative karmic effects.
