Overview

A new edition of Alexis de Tocqueville's classic work of political theory and history, Democracy in America (De La Démocratie en Amérique), containing in one book both volumes of this foundational work of American political science and theory. Democracy in Americachronicles Tocqueville's insightful observations of American culture, society, and government structures during his visits to America in the 1830s. Tocqueville's Democracy in America is among the most popular and influential works of political science and is still read and studied today by students looking to get a better understanding of the American democratic system of government and both the causes and effects of its unique attributes. This edition is based on the 1862 translation by Henry Reeve (1813 – 1895), which served as a definitive translation well into the 20th century. Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 – 1859) was a French diplomat, political scientist, theorist and historian. He is best known for his works Democracy in America (published in two volumes, 1835 and 1840) and The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856). In both works, he analysed the the relationship between governmental and social structures and improved living standards and social conditions in America and other Western societies. Democracy in America is particularly famous and still read and studied to this day, as it is considered to be on the other earliest definitive works of sociology and political science.
