Beautiful Ugly

When Grady Green’s wife disappears, Alice Feeney’s Beautiful Ugly turns an interrupted phone call into a mystery shaped by grief and doubt. Abby is driving home when she tells Grady that she has stopped near a cliff; after he hears her leave the car, the call ends and no trace of her is found. A year later, the stalled novelist accepts an invitation to a remote Scottish island, hoping isolation will help him work. On the island he sees a woman who appears to be Abby, yet the closed community and its watchful inhabitants make certainty difficult. The premise establishes a marriage under pressure without disclosing what Grady ultimately learns.

Feeney uses the island’s physical separation to narrow both the investigation and Grady’s perspective. His desire for an answer competes with the habits of a storyteller, so observation, memory, and invention cannot be cleanly separated. The missing-wife plot also examines how intimacy can coexist with private histories and how grief can turn resemblance into evidence.
