Overview

Stephen King’s Bag of Bones centers on Mike Noonan, a forty-year-old bestselling novelist who remains overwhelmed by grief four years after the sudden death of his wife, Jo. He can no longer face the blank screen of his word processor, and recurring nightmares pull his attention toward Sara Laughs, the isolated summer house he shared with Jo in Maine. Returning there offers a possible escape from paralysis, but it also places him inside a mystery tied to the past.

The nearby town appears familiar on the surface yet is dominated by Max Devore, a wealthy man seeking custody of his three-year-old granddaughter from the child’s widowed young mother. Mike becomes involved in their struggle and grows attached to both mother and child. Their custody conflict gives his return a human urgency beyond his private mourning, and Devore’s influence makes resistance costly.

At Sara Laughs, ghostly visitations and increasingly intense nightmares accompany the unexpected return of Mike’s ability to write. The house seems to connect his loss, the community’s hidden history, and the danger surrounding the child. Bag of Bones brings grief, renewed love, family conflict, and supernatural threat into the same story. Mike’s recovery cannot be separated from the forces awakened at the lake or from the question of what those forces want from him.
