Overview

Before he came to national attention for his 1900 novel Sister Carrie , Dreiser worked as a magazine editor and freelance writer. This volume comprises 33 of Dreiser's interviews and essays, most of which have not been republished since they first appeared in print. The pieces look into many corners of the American arts scene as the Modernist era began cranking up at the turn of the last century. In making observations on the work of writers, artists, musicians, and arts organizations, Dreiser shows a keen curiosity about the creative process and an eye for the peculiarly American spirit reflected in his subjects' work. Includes reproductions of photographs and drawings that originally accompanied the articles. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
