This book is based upon a manuscript that is preserved at the Kautz Family Young Men’s Christian Association Archives’ Turkey fund at the University of Minnesota. It is comprised of a report based on a survey carried out by the professors of the International College of Izmir in Smyrna, or modern Izmir. Smyrna was the largest and the most important city and port of Asia Minor in the early 20th century. The report is significant in that it was written immediately before the conquest of Smyrna by the Turkish National Forces in 1922. It presents a comprehensive account of the city including various aspects such as the economy, industry, administration, health and education and reflects the atmosphere in those troublesome years after the World War I. It is a great resource for those who are interested in Smyrna and the history of Asia Minor in the early 20th century.
