A philosophical search for the existence of a common link that might determine the rules that govern cosmology, physics and chemistry, biology and the social sciences. That common link is suggested to be the gradual loss of usable energy or rising entropy. It is postulated that progress is always dependant upon a concept that is described as stratified organisation. In other words progress in cosmology, biology or social science will not occur until a stratum of circumstance has been created that increases the probability of chance events occurring. It is also of relevance that energy will trend towards lower usable states by the most direct path a reality that also increases the probability of a chance event occurring.
