Umberto Eco

Umberto Eco (1932–2016) was an Italian semiotician, novelist, critic and professor who brought medieval culture, mass media and the theory of signs into the same intellectual field. The Name of the Rose turns a murder investigation in a monastery into a contest over interpretation, knowledge and authority; its detective plot advances by testing how signs can mislead. Foucault's Pendulum follows editors whose invented conspiracy begins to govern their lives, exposing the seductions of pattern and paranoid explanation. Baudolino approaches history through an unreliable storyteller whose inventions become difficult to separate from belief. Eco's learning is animated by irony rather than displayed as a closed system, and his novels repeatedly ask what readers do with incomplete evidence.
