James Matthew Barrie was a playwright and novelist whose work places childhood imagination beside the costs of growing up. Peter Pan brings adventure, theatrical wit, and emotional unease together through the boy who refuses adulthood, Wendy’s changing understanding of home, and the unstable freedom of Neverland. The Little White Bird contains an earlier form of Peter and shows how the character emerged from a broader London narrative. An Auld Licht Manse and Other Sketches belongs to Barrie’s earlier prose, where community observation and comic detail operate on a smaller scale. Peter Pan is the natural center of his work, but The Little White Bird gives useful context for its development. Moving between them reveals that Barrie’s fantasy depends not only on escape, but also on memory, separation, and the knowledge that time continues for everyone except Peter.
